MEMORIES

I was listening to an old Temptation’s song “Memories”; now this song came out around 1975 on their ‘album’ A Song For You – so no doubt a lot of you have never heard it or even heard of it! So I suggest you YouTube it.

This is probably one of the most beautiful songs that I have heard and it always makes me cry. Sometimes the tears are from the sheer magnitude of the beauty of the song, but most often than not, the tears are from the memories it evokes—I guess that’s what it’s supposed to do after all, given its name. Wonderful, beautiful, sad, ugly, delightful, depressing, pleasing, unhappy….all of these emotions and more flood my soul from listening to one song, yet still I listen.

Some of the words include “…sweet, sweet memories of days gone by, that make me cry…that make me sad.” I know, I know.....I shouldn’t listen to the song if it does that to me. But sometimes, I want the memories, I need them…I need to understand that from the memories, I learn. I learn to lean on God. We all have memories that make us sad, some of those memories may be very old but a great deal of them might just be ‘fresh’ memories. There is not a one of us that have not experienced a bout of sadness when an event or even a song triggers a memory; perhaps the death of a loved one, the trials and tribulations of life or the memory of someone hurting you.

I am at a stage in my life where the memories are of the fresh designation, along with the accompanying pain. And that’s okay, because I know how to handle them. The memories will become what they are supposed to be – distant – resurrected only by hearing a certain song and then die as quickly, once the song ends.
